Useful Info > Fallen Stock
The EU rules outlawed the burial of
stock on farms. However, this does not appear to bother DEFRA which has
failed to confirm details of a national collection scheme - including
how it will work, who will fund it and what precautions will be taken
to safeguard human and animal health.
As ever there appears to be little logic or reason behind the
regulation. Many farmers are grateful for hunt kennels disposing
of around 415,000 carcasses each year at minimal cost. What about
the remaining 3.6 million dead cows, sheep, horses etc? Without a
common sense solution thousands of carcasses will litter the
countryside, endangering animal and human health.
The South Herefordshire Hunt continues to offer a fallen stock service
for farmers over whose land we hunt. The service is free for
calves that are stillborn and up to a week old although we have to charge for sheep (£20.00), cows £45.00) & horses
(140.00). We will try to keep these charges as low as
possible but they are dependent on fuel and ministry costs which we
have no control over.
